The Rivers State Government has announced plans to enrol its workforce into the Employees’ Compensation Scheme of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF).
Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr. Benibo Anabraba, disclosed this on Wednesday during a courtesy visit by the leadership of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Rivers State Council, to his office.
Dr. Anabraba said the state is currently reviewing the policies guiding the scheme, noting that once Governor Siminalayi Fubara gives final approval, workers will begin to benefit from medical care, rehabilitation, and compensation in cases of work-related injuries, illnesses, or fatal accidents.
“We have met with the management of the Nigerian Social Insurance Trust Fund and are intentional about the commencement of the scheme in Rivers State,” he said. “The welfare of workers remains a top priority of this administration, and we want to ensure that employees injured in the line of duty get the necessary care and support.”
He added that the state government will also extend the scheme to private sector operators—particularly those in the construction sector—by making NSITF certification a requirement to guarantee the safety and well-being of local workers.
The SSG further expressed concern over the indiscriminate parking of trucks and tankers along major roads, describing it as a threat to public safety and the environment. He urged the TUC to sensitise its affiliated unions, including shipping, forwarding, tipper, quarry, and road transport groups, on the need to comply with state traffic regulations.
Dr. Anabraba warned that the government may be compelled to take decisive action if the illegal parking persists.
