The Rivers State Government has commissioned an Innovation Hub for adolescents and young people in Port Harcourt, as part of efforts to empower them with entrepreneurial and technical skills while promoting economic growth in the state.
The centre, located in the Fimie-Ama Community of Port Harcourt City Local Government Area, was inaugurated by the Commissioner for Health, Dr Adaeze Chidinma Oreh. It is equipped with modern facilities including ICT and robotics rooms, app development and media studios, beauty and vocational training spaces, as well as wellness and counselling services.
Speaking at the inauguration, Dr Oreh urged adolescents and young people to maximise the opportunities provided by the hub to acquire relevant skills, make informed life choices, and contribute meaningfully to the socio-economic development of Rivers State.
She noted that the initiative reflects the state government’s commitment to youth development, innovation, and sustainable economic empowerment.
The Innovation Hub is the product of a partnership between the Rivers State Government, the United States Centres for Disease Control (CDC), and the Institute of Human Virology Nigeria (IHVN), with support from Project Hope.
Chief Operating Officer of IHVN, Dr Charles Mensah, said the centre would provide young people with practical skills and opportunities needed for personal and professional growth.
Also speaking, CDC Country Director, Dr Meghna Desai, said the hub is designed to equip adolescents and young people with critical entrepreneurial and technical skills that will reduce vulnerability and promote economic independence.
