The Rivers State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to reducing maternal and newborn deaths as it officially flagged off the Maternal and Newborn Mortality Reduction Initiative (MAMII) in Bonny Local Government Area.
Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Adaeze Adaeze Oreh, said the state had fully embraced the MAMII initiative as part of its drive to ensure safe delivery and a healthy start for every child.
She stressed that no woman should lose her life while giving birth and no child should die from preventable causes.
Dr. Oreh noted that the initiative would strengthen healthcare delivery, particularly in hard-to-reach and riverine communities, adding that the state government was committed to making childbirth a moment of joy rather than sorrow for families.
She expressed appreciation to the Federal Government for donating two water ambulances to Rivers State, describing the gesture as a major boost to emergency response and referral services in riverine areas.
The health commissioner also commended health workers, community members, and traditional rulers for their support and cooperation, urging them to turn their commitments into concrete actions that would help save lives.
The event was attended by traditional rulers, healthcare professionals, and members of the host community, who pledged their support for the successful implementation of the MAMII programme in Bonny and across the state.
