The Rivers State Government has received a significant boost in its drive to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality with the donation of a boat ambulance by the National Emergency Medical Services and Ambulance System (NEMSAS).
The Rivers State Ministry of Health announced the development in a statement on Thursday, noting that the NEMSAS delegation was led by its Programme Manager, Dr Doubra Emuren.
The boat ambulance was formally presented to the State Commissioner for Health, Dr Adaeze Chidinma Oreh.
According to the ministry, the donation forms part of NEMSAS’ ongoing efforts to strengthen emergency medical services in Rivers State, with particular focus on riverine and other hard-to-reach communities.
Speaking at the presentation, Dr Emuren said the initiative is targeted at improving access to timely emergency care and reducing maternal and neonatal mortality rates across the state.
In her response, Dr Oreh expressed appreciation to NEMSAS for the support, describing the boat ambulance as a critical addition to the state’s emergency response infrastructure. She noted that the intervention would greatly enhance healthcare delivery in riverine and rural areas where access to medical services remains a challenge.
She reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to improving healthcare outcomes and ensuring that lifesaving services reach residents in all parts of Rivers State.
