Arise Television anchor, Rufai Oseni, has called on the Supreme Court to expedite a hearing on the case challenging the state of emergency rule and appointment of a sole administrator in Rivers State.
Speaking on The Morning Show, Oseni faulted the apex court for what he described as an undue delay in addressing the suit filed by several Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors. He argued that the lingering case poses serious implications for democracy and the conduct of the forthcoming local government elections in the state.
“When the story of democracy is written in this country many years from now, we will ask questions about what the court did,” Oseni said. “Why has the Supreme Court not heard that case, or do they want to delay it until the expiration of the six months’ state of emergency? If the court fails to sit on it, how do we determine whether the declaration of a state of emergency was right?”
He stressed that the outcome of the case would shape the political direction of Rivers State and urged the judiciary to uphold its responsibility as a pillar of democracy.
