The Rivers Elders and Leaders Forum has commended the recent reconciliation between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, describing the move as a welcome step towards restoring peace and unity in the state.
In a press statement signed by the Acting Chairman, Alabo Dr. Gabriel Toby, the forum said the prolonged political rift between Wike, Fubara, and the Rivers State House of Assembly had dealt a major blow to the state’s unity and image, causing unnecessary tension and division.
The group expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for intervening in the crisis, noting that earlier attempts by the forum to mediate were unsuccessful. It said its sole motivation has always been the protection of Rivers State’s dignity and the promotion of good governance, with no political or personal interest.
While acknowledging the progress made, the forum said it would not comment further on the peace deal, as the terms of reconciliation have not been made public. However, it stressed that any agreement must align with the Nigerian Constitution and the rule of law.
The elders also called for the lifting of the state of emergency declared in the state and the full restoration of suspended democratic institutions, insisting that the will of the people must be respected and governance allowed to function unhindered.
They urged all residents of Rivers State to embrace the spirit of reconciliation as a foundation for a new beginning rooted in unity, peace, and development.
“Let Rivers State rise again in pride and purpose,” the statement concluded.
