No fewer than 500 elderly residents of Rivers State have benefited from a N200,000 cash grant each under the Renewed Hope Initiative Elderly Support Scheme (RHIESS).
The empowerment programme, held on Tuesday, December 16, 2026, was implemented through a collaboration between the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) and the Rivers State Government.
RHIESS is a national social investment programme spearheaded by Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, to appreciate senior citizens for their years of service and contributions to national development. Speaking through representatives, the First Lady urged beneficiaries to remain active and maintain healthy lifestyles, encouraging them to “find joy in old age.”
In addition to the financial support, the Rivers State Government also unveiled a new welfare initiative that provides free medical care for senior citizens across the state. The healthcare service will be delivered under the Health4All Rivers Initiative, aimed at improving access to quality healthcare and enhancing the overall wellbeing of elderly residents.
