The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has described the emerging political alliance in Rivers State as unprecedented, noting that it marks the first time Nigeria’s ruling party and the main opposition are working together in the interest of a state.
Wike, speaking on recent political developments, said the “rainbow coalition” in Rivers State is a unique arrangement that prioritizes unity over rivalry.
“It is unprecedented to have the ruling party and the main opposition party working together in the interest of our state,” he said. “Some people may not be happy about this collaboration, but that is their concern.”
The former Rivers State governor emphasized that such cooperation is rare across Nigeria, where major political parties often engage in fierce conflicts rather than collaboration.
“I don’t know how many states can have the two major political parties working together without fighting themselves,” he added.
Wike dismissed allegations of political pressure or manipulation, insisting that he remains focused and cannot be swayed.
“I cannot fall for any temptation or trap set by anyone. Nothing is secret in politics—we are aware of everything happening, but they have no effect,” he said.
He also warned against attempts to incite ethnic divisions, stressing his commitment to inclusiveness.
“Those sending people to preach ethnicity will not succeed. I will work with sincere individuals, regardless of where they come from,” Wike stated.
The minister further cautioned Rivers politicians against aligning with external political figures, insisting that no governor from another state can influence political outcomes in Rivers.
“No governor from any state can determine what will happen in Rivers State. They will only deceive you and abandon you,” he said.
On the issue of political endorsements ahead of the 2027 general elections, Wike clarified that he has not endorsed any candidate for positions such as governorship, National Assembly, or state assembly.
“I have not promised anybody anything concerning 2027. I have not endorsed anyone for any position,” he said.
However, Wike declared his support for President Bola Tinubu.
“The only person I have declared support for in 2027 is President Bola Tinubu,” he stated.
He also warned politicians against assuming that defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC) guarantees political advancement.
“Decamping to the APC is not an automatic ticket for a second term. You must show your report card,” Wike said.
The FCT minister expressed appreciation for members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, noting that their loyalty and sacrifices have helped sustain his political structure.
“We are here today because the State Assembly stood firm. I do not abandon those who make sacrifices,” he said.
Wike also issued a stern warning to political appointees, cautioning against disloyalty.
“Woe unto anyone we have given an appointment who turns around to criticize us. Some people forget how they got their positions,” he added.
He concluded by urging supporters not to be misled by political promises, reiterating that any future endorsements would be made openly and with the knowledge of party elders.
“Do not allow anyone to deceive you into losing what you already have. When the time comes to endorse candidates, it will not be done in secret,” Wike said.
