The Rivers State Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) have accused the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) of recruiting impostors to pose as activists in a bid to legitimise the forthcoming local government elections.
Chairman of the coalition, Enefa Georgewill, alleged that politicians in the state have consistently sponsored groups masquerading as CSOs to endorse what he described as an “illegal process.”
He maintained that the current RSIEC lacks the legitimacy to invite or hold meetings with the coalition. Georgewill, however, urged residents to remain calm and continue with their daily activities, while calling on them to boycott the polls.
The coalition also warned that any attempt to impose a predetermined outcome through compromised structures could further undermine democratic processes in the state. It stressed that civil society remains committed to genuine electoral reforms that would guarantee credibility and fairness.
As of press time, RSIEC had yet to respond to the allegations.
