The father of a 12-year-old rape victim, Nwigo Nwalara has been remanded at the Port Harcourt Correctional Centre for allegedly collecting N800,000 from 39-year-old Collins Azunna, the suspect to cover up the case.
Chief Magistrate F. N Amanze also remanded the suspect, and adjourned the matter to January 13, 2022 for continuation.
That, was after the defence lawyer, Edwin Nwoka had alleged that the suspect, was charged to court because he refused to pay extra money demanded by the victim’s family.
Lawyer to the girl’s father, Ebi Igwe on his part, said his client initially refused to collect the money but finally agreed, after a female police officer, in charge of the case at the Eleme Police Division, pleaded with him to collect the money.
Meanwhile, Civil Society Groups have called on relevant agencies to properly investigate the matter and ensure justice is served to put an end to such heinous crime.
