Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule is currently leading a delegation of the House to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Conference taking place in Belém, Brazil.
The delegation includes key members of the House Committee on Environment: Rt. Hon. Dumle Maol, Deputy Speaker; Hon. Major Jack, House Leader; and Hon. Lolo Opuende.
The UNFCCC hosts the Conference of the Parties (COP), the highest decision-making body for implementing global commitments on climate change. With 198 participating countries, it is one of the largest multilateral platforms within the United Nations system. This year’s gathering marks the 30th edition of the annual climate leadership summit.
The Rivers State House of Assembly says it anticipates increased collaboration with relevant national and international authorities once the Rivers State Climate Change Bill 2025, currently before the House, is passed and assented to. The legislation is expected to position the state to access global climate-related support and resources.
The Speaker and other members of the delegation are expected to return to the country soon.
