Members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have returned an alleged unsolicited and unapproved sum of ₦100,000 credited to their personal bank accounts, saying the transfer did not receive legislative approval.
Hon. Enemi Alabo George, Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Petitions and Complaints in a statement issued on Tuesday, said the Assembly members eceived bank alerts of ₦100,000 each on December 30, 2025. According to the lawmakers, the funds were transferred on the instructions of the Executive Governor of Rivers State, Sir Siminalayi Fubara.
He said upon discovering that the transfers were neither requested nor approved, members immediately took steps to return the funds to the account of the Rivers State Government.
The lawmakers reiterated that, as an institution established by law and guided by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, all public expenditures must follow due process, including legislative approval.
They further alleged that since assuming office in 2023, the governor has consistently drawn from the state’s consolidated revenue account without legislative approval, despite repeated warnings from the House, judgments of the Supreme Court, and in what they described as defiance of the Constitution and the principle of separation of powers.
The Assembly warned government officials and staff allegedly involved in actions that contravene the Constitution and laws of Rivers State, stating that such activities are being closely monitored.
“We assure the good people of Rivers State that we will not relent as we carry out our constitutional duties,” the statement said.
