The Rivers State House of Assembly has formally commenced impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara, unveiling eight allegations bordering on constitutional breaches and financial misconduct.
The allegations were made public amid the escalating political tension in the state, as the lawmakers accused the governor of actions they say undermine democratic governance and the independence of the legislature.
According to the Assembly, Governor Fubara is accused of reckless and unconstitutional expenditure of public funds, as well as the misappropriation of state resources without legislative approval. The lawmakers also alleged that the governor deliberately hindered the Rivers State House of Assembly from carrying out its constitutional responsibilities.
Other allegations include the illegal appointment of individuals into government positions without subjecting them to screening and confirmation by the House, as required by the Constitution. The Assembly further accused the governor of seizing salaries and statutory funds meant for its members.
Specifically, the lawmakers claimed that the salaries of the Clerk of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Emeka Amadi, were unlawfully withheld. They also accused the governor of refusing to implement constitutional provisions granting financial autonomy to the legislature and the judiciary.
Additionally, the House alleged that funds meant for the operations of the Rivers State House of Assembly Service Commission were withheld, thereby hampering its activities.
The impeachment move marks a new phase in the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State, with the Assembly insisting that due process will be followed as the proceedings unfold. The governor is yet to formally respond to the allegations at the time of filing this report.
