The Rivers State House of Assembly has directed the state’s Ministries of Environment, and Urban and Regional Planning, to immediately develop a comprehensive plan for the desilting of canals and drainages across the state.
The directive followed deliberations on the growing incidents of flash flooding in various parts of the state. The Assembly also mandated its Committees on Environment and Urban and Regional Planning to monitor and ensure effective implementation of measures aimed at mitigating the causes of flooding.
In a related development, the House commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for granting a presidential pardon to the Ogoni Nine and conferring posthumous national honours on them, describing the gesture as a significant step toward national reconciliation and justice.
