Factional Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Emeka Beke, has vowed to challenge the authority of the state’s sole administrator to conduct local government elections.
In a statement issued over the weekend, Beke argued that the sole administrator lacks the constitutional power to oversee the electoral process, noting that only duly elected officials are empowered to conduct such elections.
He further expressed concerns over the disregard for the rule of law, referencing his court victories affirming him as the legitimate chairman of the party up to the Court of Appeal. Beke said the party’s leadership crisis and the state’s alleged non-compliance with legal processes have made it difficult to determine whether the APC will participate in the forthcoming local polls.
Meanwhile, the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) announced that it would unveil a revised timetable for the elections today. The commission said stakeholders, including political parties, security agencies, and the media, have been invited for the briefing.
