The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET) has forecasted that Lagos, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom will experience between 250 to 290 rainy days in 2025—the highest in the country.
In its 2025 Seasonal Climate Prediction released on Monday, the agency also warned of potential cholera outbreaks and other waterborne diseases due to anticipated heavy rainfall and widespread flooding. States identified as high-risk include Lagos, the Federal Capital Territory, Kaduna, Ebonyi, Cross River, Abia, and Akwa Ibom, particularly in flood-prone areas with poor sanitation.
NiMET attributed the heightened risk to increased rainfall, storm surges, and rising sea temperatures, especially in coastal regions. It cautioned that flooding could worsen public health challenges, particularly in communities where open defecation leads to fecal contamination of water sources.
