The Coordinator of Pensioners in Rivers State, Lucky Ati says some pensioners are being owed arrears for over 40 months by the Rivers State Government.
Speaking to journalists yesterday in Port Harcourt, Ati said the “stomach infrastructure” programme by the governor is good but pensioners should be paid, as pension is a statutory right and has nothing to do with that.
According to him, it is shocking that the governor has remained silent on pension arrears and gratuities of civil servants in the state.
He called on the state government to take the issue of workers welfare seriously, as they deserve to be paid after serving the government for years.
He noted that so many of them have lost their lives while some are down with terminal ailments due to lack of funds.
Ati, also urged the current administration to fulfil it’s promise of employing Rivers youths into the state civil service.
