A suit by the Labour Party seeking to declare the seats of 27 lawmakers of the Rivers State House of Assembly vacant over alleged defection from the PDP to the APC has been fixed for January 21, 2025 for ruling by a High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The Labour party is also praying the court to order INEC to conduct by-election to fill the vacant seats.
The Presiding Judge, Justice Emmanuel Obele adjourned the matter to the said date after listening to both counsels.
Recall that Amaewhule and others had announced their defection from the People’s Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress on the floor of the Assembly, and were later received into the party by a faction led by Chief, Tony Okocha.
However, the lawmakers are now saying their defection was not valid, noting that a mere pronouncement does not make one a member of a political party.
