Retired police officers across Nigeria have announced plans to embark on a nationwide protest over lingering issues in the country’s pension system, sparking intense public debate on social media.
Under the umbrella of the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) retirees’ platform, the former officers say they are demanding urgent government action to address persistent delays in pension payments, inadequate benefits, and years of systemic neglect. They accuse the authorities of failing to honour promises to clear outstanding arrears and improve their post-service welfare.
Many of the retirees, some of whom have reportedly gone months without receiving any pension, say they are struggling to meet basic needs, with their deteriorating living conditions pushing them to the brink of poverty.
The protest announcement has ignited widespread reactions online, particularly on platform X (formerly Twitter), where Nigerians are calling for immediate government intervention. While many sympathise with the officers and support their call for justice, others have raised concerns about the possible security implications of mass protests by trained ex-security personnel, urging peaceful engagement instead.
