Some residents of Port Harcourt, have called on relevant authorities to take adequate measures to prevent scavengers from stealing manhole covers across the city.
Our correspondent who visited some roads in Port Harcourt, confirmed that there were many manholes without covers, as they have been allegedly stolen by scavengers.
A resident of Azikiwe street, Mr Donald who spoke to us, said scavengers do steal the manhole covers made of iron at nights.
According to him, it is difficult to find a manhole with cover around the area, and that even when the government replaces them, they hardly last for more than a week.
He recalled that few months ago he caught some scavengers trying to remove a manhole cover at the Ikokwu junction at night, and when he tried stopping them, they almost lynched him as he scampered for safety.
He urged construction workers to device a means of sealing the covers so they cannot be easily removed.
He also called on security operatives to monitor the activities of scavengers at nights to ensure the arrest of those found wanting.
