The Rivers State Chapter of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), has informed residents of the state that registration and issuance of National Identity Number is free.
State Coordinator of the commission, Amonia Oghenekaro disclosed this in a statement in Port Harcourt, over the weekend.
She advised residents not to pay any amount of money for the exercise, as those extorting applicants are not staff of the commission but hoodlums.
“Those engaging in acts of collecting money from the public are hoodlums outside our premises, they are doing all sorts of things and extorting the innocent public, they usually hang around to take advantage of some of them who are impatient,” she said.
“We have reported the issue to the Elekahia police station and from time to time the police usually come here to arrest those criminals,” she added.
