The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has explained the reasons behind Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde’s opposition to him and the current administration, saying it stems from Makinde’s failure to secure a ministerial appointment.
Speaking during a media chat, Wike said Makinde became hostile after being denied a ministerial slot, stressing that he would not “join issues” with the Oyo governor because he was already well established before venturing fully into politics.
Wike disclosed that at a point, Makinde was brought to him with a request that the structure of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State be handed over to him, a move he said was initially resisted.
According to the FCT minister, Makinde only emerged victorious in his eventual governorship bid after the party agreed to support him, following several earlier failed attempts.
Wike further stated that his own rise in politics came early, recalling that he served as chairman of one of the most influential local government areas in Nigeria. He added that wealth had “blindfolded” Makinde and some other governors, influencing their political conduct.
The comments come amid ongoing tensions within the PDP and growing public disagreements among its leading figures.
