Rivers United began their CAF Champions League campaign on a disappointing note, falling 3–0 to defending champions Pyramids FC in their matchday-one fixture in Cairo on Saturday.
The Nigerian side held firm in the first half, restricting the hosts to a few half-chances and keeping the game goalless at the break. However, the contest changed after the restart as Pyramids FC stepped up the pressure.
Ahmed Atef proved the difference, netting all three goals for the Egyptian champions. He broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute, doubled the lead five minutes later, and sealed his hat-trick in the 72nd minute to hand Rivers United a tough defeat on the road.
Rivers United will now look to recover quickly as they prepare for their next group-stage fixture.
