A 13-year-old girl has been left with severe burns after she was allegedly tortured with a pressing iron by the principal and some teachers of a school in Eagle Island, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
According to reports, the girl, said to be a domestic help, was accused of stealing ₦30,000 by her guardian, who then took her to the school for disciplinary action. The school’s principal, a woman whose name is yet to be disclosed, allegedly detained the girl, during which she and some teachers inflicted burns on her body using a pressing iron.
The incident, which occurred around on Monday, drew the attention of neighbours and passersby, who attempted to mob the principal and blocked efforts to take both the girl and the suspect to the police.
However, human rights activist, Prince Wiro who arrived at the scene was able to calm the angry crowd and facilitated the handover of the victim and the accused to officers at Azikiwe Police Station for further investigation.
The condition of the girl remains unknown at the time of filing this report. Police are expected to issue a formal statement.
