The Rivers State Chapter of the National Youth Council of Nigeria has decided to suspend its planned protest on the Eleme junction-Akpajo axis of the East-West Road which was billed to commence on Wednesday October 26, 2022.
The suspension came after an intervention from the new Rivers State Commissioner of Police, CP Okon Effiong Okon.
The new Police Commissioner, on assumption of office on Tuesday October 25, 2022 immediately went into a closed door meeting with the youth body where he appealed to them to suspend the protest and give him a month to interface with the Federal Government to begin immediate reconstruction of the East-West road.
The Chairman of the State Chapter of the Youth Council, Comr. Nwisabari Bani Samuel who spoke with newsmen after the meeting disclosed that the decision to suspend the protest was informed by the collective agreement with his executives and local Government Coordinators. He said the decision is a welcome package gifted the new Commissioner.
“We decided collectively to suspend this protest after listening to the new Commissioner’s appeal and this is a welcome gift from us to him. However, we shall set up a tripod committee which will monitor the follow up process and give the Council continuous update on the progress rate,” he stated.
He further appealed to all youths, Rivers people, commuters and road users to go about their normal businesses and promised that the Council will do everything in conjunction with other groups to see to the beginning of reconstruction works on the said road before January 2023.
