The Rivers State Government has called on residents to prepare for potential flooding following a federal advisory that listed the state among high-risk areas alongside several others and the Federal Capital Territory.
Hector Igbikiowubo Senior Special Adviser on Media to the Sole Administrator made this known in a statement.
He said the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) is deploying teams to Rivers and other vulnerable states to educate communities on flood preparedness and safety measures
The state government expressed full support for the initiative and urged residents, particularly those in flood-prone areas, to take precautionary steps to protect lives and property
He warned against illegal land reclamation activities citing their role in worsening flood risks and environmental damage It said the unauthorized conversion of wetlands and ecologically sensitive zones disrupts natural drainage making communities more vulnerable during heavy rainfall
The government vowed to prosecute anyone involved in such activities under environmental protection laws
Hector advised residents to clear drainages and avoid dumping waste in water channels, move to safer areas if living in flood-prone zones, cooperate with emergency officials and follow safety advisories, and report illegal reclamation and other environmental violations to the authorities
He reaffirmed the State Government’s commitment to environmental protection and the safety of its citizens
