Authorities in the Port Harcourt City Local Government Area have apprehended several individuals claiming to be employees of the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company who were attempting to relocate an electric pole at the Akokwa area of Iloabuchi. The move was allegedly aimed at enabling the former owners of a government-acquired land—purchased during the construction of the Iloabuchi section of the Port Harcourt ring road—to illegally erect a structure on the property.
According to sources, officials from the local council, accompanied by personnel from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), raided the site and arrested the workers, who were reportedly being guarded by members of the Diobu Vigilante Service.
The operation led to heightened tension in the area as NSCDC officers fired shots into the air, causing panic among residents. The situation escalated into a clash between the vigilante members and NSCDC officials.
Officers from the Azikiwe Police Division later arrived at the scene and detained the suspects, bringing the chaotic situation under control.
