The Port Harcourt City Local Government Council has announced a ban on illegal trading activities and road obstructions across major roads and junctions within the city.
In a public notice issued by the Mayor of the council, Allwell Ihunda, the council raised concerns over the increasing nuisance caused by roadside trading, unauthorized motor parks, mechanic activities, and indiscriminate loading and offloading of goods on public roads.
The council noted that such activities have continued to obstruct the free flow of traffic, degrade the city environment, and create security risks for residents.
According to the directive, all forms of trading and commercial activities, roadside motor parks, mechanic operations, loading and offloading of vehicles, and the display of goods or wares within two metres from the edge of any public road or drainage channel are strictly prohibited.
The mayor warned that defaulters would face immediate enforcement measures, including the removal or demolition of illegal structures, confiscation of goods, sealing of affected premises, arrest, and prosecution in accordance with the council’s bye-laws and applicable laws of Rivers State.
The council also disclosed that its Task Force on Traffic Decongestion and Environmental Sanitation has been fully activated and will begin strict enforcement operations across the city.
The council reiterated its commitment to restoring order, improving public safety, and preserving the Garden City image of Port Harcourt through the removal of illegal structures and the clearing of road obstructions.
