Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has expressed confidence that the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, may still regain his freedom through a political process.
Levinus Nwabughiogu, Chief Press Secretary to the Deputy Speaker said Kalu gave the assurance following Thursday’s judgment of a Federal High Court in Abuja, which sentenced Kanu to life imprisonment. Despite the ruling, the Deputy Speaker said “all hope is not lost,” revealing that efforts to pursue a political resolution are already in motion.
He stated that with the court process concluded, avenues previously blocked for political intervention have now reopened. Kalu added that he believes President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will be receptive to appeals from respected Igbo leaders seeking Kanu’s release.
“It is now time to explore political solutions that had been hindered because the matter was before the court,” Kalu said. “Now that the court has finished, it is time to intensify requests for the President’s intervention, and we are sure he is not averse to it. We are going to get it. All hope is not lost. Our people should remain calm.”
The Deputy Speaker appealed for calm across the South East and other parts of the country, reassuring citizens that meaningful steps are being taken to address the situation.
