The Nigeria Police Force has warned its officers in Rivers State against assault and extortion at checkpoints.
Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 16, Benjamin Okolo gave the warning when he met personnel of the Rivers State Police command at the officers’ mess in Port Harcourt.
He said officers need to conduct themselves professionally to earn the respect of members of the public.
He also said officers are not allowed to check people’s phones unless on special occasions.
He urged them to work in synergy with other security agencies in the fight against crime.
Okolo vowed that the command will deal with any officer found wanting in accordance with its laws, as the NPF is against such acts.
