The Rivers State Police Command has launched an investigation into the tragic death of three men, including two siblings, who lost their lives while attempting to clean out an unused water well in Aminigboko Community, Abua/Odual Local Government Area, on Sunday.
According to the command’s spokesperson, CSP Grace Iringe-Koko, the owner’s son had contracted the three men to clear and restore the well for use. Trouble began after one of the workers entered the well and cried out in distress. The other two men reportedly went in to assist him, but all three were later found dead.
Police suspect the well may have been filled with toxic fumes, as residents had earlier complained of a strong and unpleasant odour emanating from it before the incident.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing to establish the precise cause of death. Aminigboko is an oil- and gas-producing community in Abua LGA of Rivers State
