The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the death of a police officer following a shooting incident that occurred on Sunday, January 18, 2026, at Next Cash and Carry Supermart, Trans-Amadi, Port Harcourt.
Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Grace Koko in a statement said the victim, Inspector Ibrahim Sani, was reportedly shot by a colleague, Inspector Victor Okus, who has since been arrested and is currently in police custody. Inspector Okus is attached to 17 PMF but was on special duty at Intels, Onne at the time of the incident.
According to the Unit Commander of 14 PMF, DSP Turaki Hassan, Inspector Sani and another officer, Inspector Daniel Dauda, were on joint guard duty with military personnel when the shooting occurred around 1:20 PM.
Inspector Okus allegedly fired shots at the officers, striking them in the head and neck. Both officers were immediately rushed to Nopsam Hospital for medical treatment. Inspector Sani later died from his injuries, while Inspector Dauda remains hospitalised.
Inspector Sani’s body has been deposited at the Military Hospital Mortuary, Port Harcourt, pending preservation and autopsy.
In response to the incident, Rivers State Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga A. Adepoju, has ordered a comprehensive and transparent investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
The suspect is expected to face an Orderly Room Trial and will be charged in court for prosecution.
The Commissioner also reminded officers of the grave responsibility that comes with handling firearms while on duty, stressing that safety must always be a priority to prevent such tragedies.
The Rivers State Police Command extended its deepest condolences to the family, colleagues, and friends of Inspector Sani, reiterating its commitment to professionalism and accountability.
