The Rivers State Police Command has commenced an investigation into the death of a family of six in Ogale community, Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State, after they reportedly inhaled fumes from a generator.
The incident is said to have occurred overnight, as the generator allegedly ran through the night into Sunday morning. Neighbours reportedly became concerned when they noticed unusual silence from the household and subsequently raised the alarm.
A community source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, disclosed that the family had been making preparations to return to Port Harcourt after the holidays before the tragedy struck.
The source said, “They were found dead in various positions. It is a very unfortunate incident and we are calling on the police to do a proper investigation.”
Confirming the incident on Monday afternoon, the spokesperson of the Rivers State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, said police had begun investigations into the matter.
Iringe-Koko said, “Yes I can confirm the incident.
“From information I got the generator was inside the living room because they were afraid it would be stolen.
“Investigation is ongoing.”
