The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of one suspect in connection with the rape and murder of a young woman in her residence in Obigbo, Rivers State.
Spokesperson of the Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, who disclosed this to our correspondent, said the arrested suspect is already assisting investigators in tracking down other individuals believed to be involved in the crime.
“Yes, I am aware of it. One person has been arrested and is assisting in apprehending other suspects involved, while investigation is ongoing,” she stated.
The development follows public outrage after a family friend raised an alarm on social media, alleging that the victim, identified as Ugochi, was raped and strangled to death in her room on Monday night. The shocking incident reportedly caused panic in the compound, as residents immediately fled the area.
Police at the Obigbo Division are handling the case, while the victim’s body has been deposited in a morgue.
@torty_mercy, who raised the alarm described the victim as a young woman who left behind orphaned siblings with no one to speak for them. She said they were reluctant to share images due to the traumatic nature of the incident and the emotional impact it may have on the deceased’s younger sisters.
“We are ready to work with the police to unravel the killer or killers,” the post read, calling on security agencies and members of the public to help ensure justice is served.
