The Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company, PHED, says the recent deduction on token from prepaid meters are for servicing debts owed by customers.
Spokesperson of the company, John Onoye disclosed this in a chat with journalists in Port Harcourt, Today.
He said the deduction is not illegal neither is the company extorting customers but, recovering debts owed by them.
He apologized to consumers who were not informed of the deduction, and said it would continue till all monies are recovered.
He stated that discounts are being given to customers to help them clear up their debts.
Mr Onoye noted that some customers have forgotten about the debts but, the records are there for verification and confirmation.
He appealed to electricity consumers to always clear their bills to avoid such issues.
