Nigerian music star Peter Okoye, one-half of the famed P-Square duo, has publicly severed ties with his family, citing years of betrayal, emotional manipulation, and financial exploitation.
In a series of emotionally charged social media posts, Okoye declared, “I hereby disown my family,” stating that his decision follows over two decades of what he described as enduring manipulation and mistreatment. He emphasized prioritizing his mental health, saying, “Love doesn’t manipulate, loyalty doesn’t betray, and family does not steal from you.”
Okoye linked his decision to recent reflections on the tragic death of fellow Nigerian artist Mohbad, suggesting it prompted him to reevaluate his longstanding role as “the bigger person” in his own family dynamics.
He further alleged that a major source of the PSquare group’s earnings had been diverted over the years, accusing family members and insiders of financial misconduct. In one claim, he noted that a relative’s spouse owns 80% of the company implicated in the misappropriation of PSquare’s proceeds.
Additionally, Okoye criticized the group’s publicist for attempting to damage his reputation and drew comparisons to other artists, including May D and Cynthia Morgan, who have publicly discussed alleged mistreatment in the industry.
He also expressed regret over participating in the widely publicized PSquare reunion in November 2021, describing the move as a mistake. “They used me,” he wrote, adding that legal proceedings are now underway and that the full story will come to light in due time.
As of press time, no official response has been issued by other members of the Okoye family or PSquare.
