Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has called on the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to the South, citing the need for equity and national cohesion.
Obi made the appeal on Sunday in Ilọrin during the 2nd Annual Colloquium in honour of Associate Professor Abdulmumin Yinka Ajia, a former All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirant in Kwara State. Speaking through the National Coordinator of the Obidients Movement, Dr Tanko Yunusa, Obi stressed the importance of allowing the South to complete its tenure for the sake of national unity.
“Why should we have a northerner again when the South should be allowed to complete its turn?” Obi asked in an exclusive interview with Daily Trust. “This will promote unity and cohesiveness. Afterwards, our northern brothers can take their turn.”
He urged the coalition of opposition parties to back a southern candidate to “finish this matter,” emphasizing that such a move would strengthen the country’s democratic balance.
Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, also expressed optimism about his political prospects in the 2027 presidential race, describing himself as a capable and committed leader poised to transform Nigeria. He urged political stakeholders to avoid the kind of miscalculations that, he said, marred previous elections.
