Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has disowned pictures circulating on social media, describing them as fake and doctored.
In a statement on Tuesday, Obi said one of the images purportedly showed him with U.S. President Donald Trump, with a fabricated claim that Trump praised him, while another sought to depict him in a meeting with Lagos transport union leader, MC Oluomo.
He stressed that the pictures and accompanying stories were entirely false.
“I have not met Mr Trump recently, nor have I had any such meeting with MC Oluomo. For the avoidance of doubt, if I had such meetings, I would have personally made them public on my X handle,” Obi stated.
The former Anambra State governor warned that the incident highlights the dangers of fake news and disinformation in Nigeria. He urged Nigerians and the international community to remain vigilant, verify information before sharing, and resist propaganda that undermines truth and integrity.
Obi reiterated that his politics has never been about seeking praise or cheap publicity, but about confronting the real problems of the country. He said his focus remains on tackling insecurity, upholding the rule of law, improving education and healthcare, and lifting millions out of poverty.
