The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Tuesday issued a scathing assessment of Nigeria’s current state under the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government, accusing President Bola Tinubu’s administration of widespread insecurity, economic hardship, and anti-democratic tendencies.
At its 99th meeting held in Abuja, the PDP NEC condemned what it described as “worsening insecurity” across the country, citing rampant killings, banditry, kidnappings, and terrorist attacks. The party blamed the situation on the alleged negligence and failure of President Tinubu to fulfill his constitutional responsibility to protect lives and property.
The opposition party also decried the economic situation, highlighting rising fuel prices, increased electricity tariffs, multiple taxes, and what it termed as “ill-implemented policies” that have led to business closures, job losses, and deepening poverty nationwide.
The PDP further alleged massive corruption and policy inconsistency in the APC-led government, accusing it of treasury looting, budget padding, and mismanagement that have eroded investor confidence and hindered infrastructural development.
In a firm political stance, the NEC accused the APC of attempting to suppress opposition parties and establish a one-party state through intimidation and undemocratic practices, warning that such actions threaten Nigeria’s democratic framework.
Amid these concerns, the NEC reaffirmed the PDP’s commitment to democracy, rule of law, and the will of the people. It also announced key organizational decisions, including the ratification of committees for the upcoming National Convention scheduled for August 28–30, 2025.
Governor Ahmadu Fintiri was named Chairman of the National Convention Committee, with Governors Ademola Adeleke and Peter Mbah serving as Vice Chairman and Secretary respectively. Governor Douye Diri will chair the Zoning Committee, alongside Governors Dauda Lawal (Vice Chairman) and Caleb Mutfwang (Secretary).
The NEC also acknowledged a resolution from the South East Zonal Executive regarding the office of the party’s National Secretary, promising to deliberate on the matter at its next meeting on June 30.
In conclusion, Acting National Chairman Amb. Iliya Damagum reassured Nigerians of the PDP’s unity and resolve to “rescue the nation from the grip of the APC.”
