The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has criticised Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, over his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), saying his current political challenges are a result of his own decisions.
In a statement on Tuesday, PDP National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, said the crisis in Rivers State reflects a weakened democratic system where individuals with influence override institutions and deploy federal power to suppress opponents.
Fubara had met with President Bola Tinubu in Abuja on Monday, before announcing in Port Harcourt on Tuesday that he, his appointees, and supporters had dumped the PDP for the ruling APC. He said the move followed their decision to support President Tinubu, claiming they had not received the protection they expected from the PDP.
Reacting, Ememobong said he hoped the governor would not “fall into Stockholm Syndrome, where a victim becomes attached to his oppressor.”
He added that the PDP’s National Working Committee had taken note of Fubara’s defection, describing it as “pitiful,” and citing the legal maxim volenti non fit injuria — “to one who is willing, no harm can be done.”
