The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reaffirmed its decision to proceed with its National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for June 30, dismissing objections raised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Sunday, PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, stated that INEC lacks the legal authority to interfere in the internal affairs of political parties, particularly their statutory meetings.
“INEC has no role in the regular meetings of the NWC or NEC. These are internal party matters, as clearly established by the Supreme Court in numerous rulings,” Ologunagba said.
He emphasized that the NEC meeting remains on course and would only be postponed under the party’s discretion. “INEC cannot cancel our meetings. It is the party’s prerogative to decide such matters. INEC has no authority to do so. We are planning to hold our meeting as scheduled; if anything changes, we will brief you.”
The PDP has been grappling with a leadership crisis, particularly over the national secretary position, which is being contested by Sunday Udeh-Okoye and former Imo State governorship candidate Samuel Anyanwu, who is reportedly backed by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike. The dispute has contributed to delays in holding NEC meetings and heightened internal tensions within the party.
