The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has denied reports suggesting that it has imposed a levy of N10,000 on its members to fund party activities, describing the claim as false and misleading.
National Publicity Secretary of the party, Comrade Ini Ememobong in a press statement said the party expressed concern over a report published by The Observer Times under the headline, “PDP Calls on Members to Contribute N10,000 Each in Bid to Fund Party Activities,” noting that the headline did not reflect the substance of an interview granted by the party.
The PDP explained that while the body of the report correctly quoted remarks made during the interview, the headline amounted to sensationalism and misrepresentation. It added that other credible media organisations reported the same interview accurately without implying any compulsory contribution.
Clarifying the issue, the party said its comments were made in response to a question on how it plans to fund its political activities following recent defections by some governors. According to the PDP, the party remains committed to voluntary, grassroots-driven funding.
“The strategy is simple: go back to the people. When the people are with you voluntarily, they fund the cause,” the statement said, recalling how voluntary contributions helped build the party in 1998. It noted that the reference to N10,000 was purely illustrative, intended to demonstrate the collective strength of voluntary support if millions of Nigerians choose to contribute.
The party stressed that there is no fixed amount, no compulsory payment, and no obligation placed on any PDP member.
The PDP urged its members and the general public to disregard the misleading headline and continue to support the party at all levels in ways they consider appropriate.
