The Bayelsa State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has formally accepted the resignation of Governor Douye Diri and some members of the State House of Assembly, following their defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The development was announced on Tuesday at the Executive Council Chambers of the Government House in Yenagoa, in the presence of the Speaker, Deputy Speaker, lawmakers, and other party stakeholders.
In a statement signed by the Acting State Publicity Secretary, Alasuote Wright Derri, the PDP State Working Caretaker Committee described the move as unfortunate but acknowledged the constitutional right of the governor and others to freedom of association.
The committee said it convened an emergency meeting to deliberate on the implications of the mass resignations and subsequently resolved to accept them in good faith.
While expressing disappointment over the development, the party said it remains proud of the legacy of past and present PDP leaders who built the party in Bayelsa, from the late Chief DSP Alamieyesegha to Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, Chief Timipre Sylva, Henry Seriake Dickson, and Douye Diri.
“The efforts of our heroes past have, by today’s actions, been torn apart, leaving behind a sad memory,” the statement read. “It is disheartening that Bayelsa State is no longer a PDP State at this time. However, this is temporary—we will reclaim our mandate and return the PDP flag to Government House, Yenagoa, come 2027.”
The party reaffirmed its faith that “God, who restored Bayelsa to the PDP in 2019 despite federal pressures, will do it again,” describing the state as a “covenant PDP State.”
It also assured supporters that the Acting State Chairman, George Turnah, and his team are determined to rebuild and strengthen the party.
“The PDP remains focused on its core values and commitment to the people of Bayelsa and the Ijaw nation. We urge all members to stay united as we work toward reclaiming our dominance in Bayelsa politics,” the statement concluded.
