President Bola Tinubu on Thursday dismissed concerns that Nigeria is drifting toward a one-party system, asserting that the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s expanding influence stems from its performance since taking office in 2023.
Speaking at the APC Renewed Hope Agenda Summit in Abuja, the President told party leaders, governors, lawmakers, and members of the National Working Committee that the administration’s economic reforms are delivering results, earning both domestic and international commendation.
“A one-party system is not suitable for democracy,” Tinubu said. “But we are one party making a difference, and people want to be part of progress.”
The event, held at the State House Conference Centre, served as a two-year review of the administration’s governance, particularly in health, infrastructure, security, and the economy. During the summit, top APC officials formally endorsed Tinubu for a second term in 2027.
Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, who chairs the Progressives Governors Forum, moved a motion for the President’s endorsement, which was seconded by Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State. National Assembly leaders, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio and House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, also pledged their support for Tinubu’s re-election.
The President used the occasion to defend his administration’s tough policy choices, including the elimination of foreign exchange arbitrage and sweeping tax reforms, which he said were necessary to restore long-term economic stability.
“We could not afford to mortgage the future of our children,” he said. “We’ve made hard decisions so Nigerians can enjoy easier lives ahead.”
Tinubu also praised members of the Federal Executive Council and the National Assembly for backing the administration’s vision, while urging continued unity within the ruling party.
