OPay has dismissed as false a viral social media message claiming the fintech company was offering a ₦5,000 cash giveaway to users in celebration of Christmas, warning Nigerians to be vigilant against scammers during the festive season.
In a statement, the company clarified that it is not running any cash giveaway or money distribution programme, describing the circulating message as misleading. OPay urged users not to transfer money to unknown persons or disclose sensitive personal information, including their Bank Verification Numbers (BVN).
The company noted that fraudsters often exploit festive periods to lure unsuspecting users with fake promotions and giveaways, usually directing them to suspicious websites or requesting personal details.
This is not the first time OPay has had to debunk such claims. In September 2024, the company denied reports of a ₦100,000 giveaway, while in August 2024 it similarly refuted claims that it was distributing ₦150,000 grants to customers.
OPay advised users to always verify information through its official communication channels, remain cautious of unsolicited messages, avoid sharing sensitive personal data, and report suspicious activities to its customer support.
The company said increased vigilance by users would help prevent financial losses and protect them from online scams.
