Former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has warned former Anambra governor Peter Obi and ex-Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi against pledging to serve only one term if elected president, describing such promises as unrealistic and misleading.
In an interview on Politics Today on Channels Television on Sunday, El-Rufai said Nigerians are now more discerning and unlikely to be influenced by what he called “false commitments” from politicians seeking power.
“I want them to stop making this kind of commitment. Nobody believes them. Things change once they get in,” he said. “Such a promise is even unfair. Four years is not enough to make meaningful change in government, and they both know this because they’ve governed before.”
El-Rufai, who was instrumental in rallying northern APC governors to support a southern presidency in 2023, noted that zoning has always been a political strategy to boost a party’s electoral chances, rather than a matter of sentiment.
