Veteran Nigerian actress and producer Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde has called for urgent structural reforms in Nigeria’s film industry, Nollywood, citing the absence of residual payments for actors as a major concern.
In a post shared Saturday on Instagram, Jalade-Ekeinde, drew comparisons between her experiences in the Nigerian industry and Hollywood. She revealed that despite spending just four years in Hollywood on two test projects, she receives monthly residual payments — a system virtually nonexistent in Nollywood.
“Just four years in Hollywood. Two test projects, monthly residuals,” she wrote. “30 years in Nollywood, with over 310 projects, no residuals.”
The actress, using hashtags such as #NollywoodNeedsStructure and #UnlearntoRelearn, urged stakeholders to address the industry’s systemic gaps, particularly the lack of compensation mechanisms that support actors beyond initial project payments.
