Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), OCJ Okocha, has backed the conduct of local government elections in Rivers State despite the ongoing emergency rule.
Speaking in an interview with journalist Ofonime Okon, Okocha stated that the organization of elections lies within the jurisdiction of electoral commissions and not governors or caretaker administrators. He maintained that the current situation does not invalidate the electoral process.
Dismissing calls for a suspension of the exercise until Governor Siminalayi Fubara fully resumes control of state affairs, Okocha stressed that elections should be institution-driven rather than dependent on individuals. He called for unwavering adherence to constitutional provisions guiding the conduct of elections.
