An oil spill has impacted the Jumbo Akatikpo Park Community in Bonny Local Government Area, prompting the Council Chairman, Hon. Abinye Blessing Pepple to call for calm as authorities move to address the incident.
Wisdom Jumbo, media aide to the Chairman in a statement said he immediately dispatched his Senior Special Adviser on Environmental and Industrial Matters, Amasenibo Akie Opuene Hart, PhD, and the Chairman of the Environmental Protection Committee, Senibo Charles Brown, to carry out an on-the-spot assessment on Thursday, November 13, 2025.
Residents reported that the spill—allegedly from the SPDC, now Renaissance African Energy Company, Oil Saver-2 to LLOD-2 facility—has disrupted their primary source of livelihood. The community, largely dependent on fishing, says the contamination has crippled marine activities and affected access to food, particularly protein sources.
Preliminary findings confirmed widespread pollution of the soil and shoreline waters. The situation has heightened community tension, especially as residents already have limited access to arable land due to previous industrial acquisitions. The little remaining farmland, they said, has now also been polluted, halting subsistence farming.
Despite the frustrations, Chairman Pepple urged residents to maintain peace while the council engages Renaissance African Energy Company to gather all sides of the matter and ensure an impartial and amicable resolution.
