An oil spill has struck B-Dere Community in Gokana Local Government Area of Rivers State following a rupture along the Trans Niger Pipeline on May 6, 2025. The incident, believed to be the result of equipment failure, has unleashed torrents of crude oil into the area, damaging property and displacing residents.
Sources say streams of crude have inundated homes, raising serious health and environmental concerns. Locals report a strong stench of oil permeating the air, with some struggling to breathe or unable to cook due to the risk of fire.
This latest spill comes less than two months after a similar pipeline explosion devastated the nearby Bodo Community on March 7, 2025, igniting a massive fire that spread across the mangrove swamps.
Authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the extent of the damage or ongoing containment efforts.
